An introductory workshop that explores human rights as it relates to gender-based violence, colonization, racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, sexism and the intersections between these and other forms of oppression. Participants will learn creative ways to engage in interactive, and reflective conversations on human rights and anti-oppression through arts and media-based activities.

What is gender-based violence? How does it affect our beliefs about gender roles, femininity, sexuality, and masculinity? This workshop is an introduction to the systemic roots of gender-based violence, which aims to show how sexism, patriarchy, homophobia and transphobia affect us all.

This workshop explores different forms of gender–based violence, how common they are, and the effects of violence on individuals and communities. Sexual assault, homophobia, sexism, transphobia and gender policing are some of the forms of gender-based violence that will be addressed. The workshop will end with a hands on opportunity to learn about Spectrum sexual identities and respond to experiences of gender-based violence.

What does it mean to be a man? How have social attitudes and expectations played a role in our conception of masculinity? This workshop sets to engage in the re-imagining manhood in order to challenge notions of patriarchy. It will reflect how current attitudes of masculinity have contributed to gender-based violence.

The challenges of learning new cultures and customs, adapting to new surroundings and handling the responsibilities of post-secondary education can be stressful. This workshop will introduce participants to understanding across cultures while providing tools, resources and support to students experiencing culture shock.

Nearly 2 in 4 women will be affected by gender-based violence during their lives. What do you do if someone asks you for support? What if they don’t ask? This workshop will introduce you to techniques, tools and resource to support peers experiencing gender-based violence. We will provide you with information on gender-based violence protocol at Humber College, as well as services available on campus and in the greater community.
